You might be really glad you brought your camera for your surface interval in Kona. Our surface intervals have not just made people's day... sometimes we hear "This is the best thing I've ever done in my life!"
Here's why:
Hawaii, being situated smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, allows for some AMAZING critter interaction. As the currents move around the world, they bring us Pelagics and a wide variety of marine mammals. The rule of thumb in Kona is to expect the unexpected. The following is a list of animals which have been seen on our surface intervals over the last couple of years:
Humpback Whales
Sperm Whales and Pygme Sperm Whales
Short Finned Pilot Whales
Pygme Killer Whales and False Killer Whales
Blainsville and Couvier Beaked Whales
Whale Sharks
Tiger Sharks
Scalloped and Great Hammerhead Sharks
Oceanic White Tip Sharks
Silky Sharks
Bronze Whaler Sharks
Monk Seal (a very endangered species)
Manta Rays
Pacific Bottlenose, Rough Toothed, Spotted and Spinner Dolphins
Here are some photos taken by Mike and Nikki over the last couple of years... on the days we were glad WE had OUR camera!
